On Saturday 13th August a Charity GAA Day was held in memory of Catherine Quinn (wife of former Bellaghy & Derry star Danny Quinn) who tragically passed away on May 13th 2011, after going through a Double Lung Transplant in May 2010.
In her memory, and to fundraise for the hospitals that have done so much fantastic work to treat Catherine during her illness - a special GAA day was organised dubbed the ‘Cairde Catherine’ event.
The event was a huge success and attracted household names from the St Mary’s Belfast team which won the Sigerson Cup in 1989, and members of the Derry squad that lifted the All-Ireland title in 1993. Danny Quinn was a pivotal member of both panels. His team-mates from ‘the Ranch’ side of ’89 included Benny Tierney, Jarlath Burns, Pascal Canavan, Seamus Downey and Malachy O’Rourke.
The Derry side of ’93 included guest appearances from James McCartan, Kieran McGeeney and Joe Brolly.
Sperrin Metal was proud to have supported this cause through sponsorship of one of the teams.
